Georg Güntner holds a position as vice head of the knowledge and media technologies group (KMT) at Salzburg Research (with about 18 members), and is working there as senior researcher and project manager as of March 1998.

Between 2000 and 2010, he has been Executive Director of Salzburg NewMediaLab (SNML, industrial competence centres programme) and since 2010, he is Executive Director of Salzburg NewMediaLab – The Next Generation (SNML-TNG, competence centres for excellent technologies programme), the Austrian competence centre on New Media hosted by Salzburg Research (www.newmedialab.at). SNML-TNG is carrying out industrial research in the areas of social software, semantic systems, and multimedia content management, which recently have been denoted “Linked Media”, since research is based on the combination of Linked Content, Linked Data and Linked People.

Since 2006, Georg Güntner is chairman of the works council (Betriebsrat) of Salzburg Research. Since 2009, he holds a position as lecturer at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule Salzburg) in the MultiMediaTechnology course (media asset management).

Georg Güntner is engaged in research on the social media, the semantic web, knowledge representation, and multimedia information systems. His particular interest is currently in the combination of content management and social media with semantic web technologies for the benefit of the media and content industries.  Since 1999, he has been conducting and supporting RTD projects in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th European Framework Programme, e.g. COVAX (IST-1999-11820), REGNET (IST-2000-26336), CULTOS (IST-2000-28134), LIVE (IST-2006-27312, www.ist-live.org) as well as other RTD programmes, e.g. myTV (COIN, 2010 on-going), UP-TO-US (Celtic, 2010 on-going).
