New smartphone app: traffic in Salzburg

More than 600 vehicles participate in a Floating Car Data (FCD) field trial since 2013 on Salzburg roads. Numerous vehicles were equipped with GPS transmitters, the data is sent anonymously to a central computer, and evaluated to a real-time traffic map for the state of Salzburg. With the new app for Android smartphones (Android 4.0 or higher) more volunteers can now participate and also retrieve the traffic data in return on their smartphone free of charge. Participants benefit from a more accurate traffic map and sustainably optimized traffic situation through intelligent traffic control.

The app was presented on March 3rd, 2014 by government representative Hans Mayr, country director of building Christian Nagl and project manager Karl Rehrl (Salzburg Research).

Still, the FCD model region Salzburg is in test mode. The goal is to generate a comprehensive, reliable and above all meaningful real-time traffic conditions map for the entire state, while maintaining data protection. All data is available to traffic planners in the city and province of Salzburg as a basis for decisions on traffic measures.

The project is coordinated by Salzburg Research on behalf of the State of Salzburg. Cooperation Partners are Obus SLB (Salzburg AG), Salzburger Verkehrsverbund GmbH, ASFINAG Maut Service GmbH and Ö3 Verkehrsredaktion.
The project ist funded by the Austrian “Klima- und Energiefonds” and the State of Salzburg.
