OTITOS – Open Test Implementation for IEC 61850-90-5-based Transmission of Synchrophasor information

Testing of IEC 61850-90-5 synchrophasor transmissions based on the open and standardized testing language TTCN-3.


The distributed monitoring of the electrical energy grid is a vital requirement for the safe and stable operation of the energy network. With a monitoring system based on so called Synchrophasor Measurements the dynamics of the transmission (and increasingly) distribution networks can be monitored in real-time. On the basis of this data arising problems can potentially be detected at an early stage and counter-measures can be triggered in time. The technical report IEC 61850-90-5 details how synchrophasor measurements can be transmitted within the framework of IEC 61850. The focus of the OTITOS project is on i) the development of test procedures for -90-5, ii) the implementation of tests based on TTCN-3 with the goal of iii) evaluating the applicability of this testing standard in the context of protocols used in the energy sector; iv) the implementation of a -90-5 stack and v) a comprehensive performance and security evaluation in a state-of-the-art testbed.
