Real-Time Overview for Commuters Traveling To and From Salzburg
A new dashboard from Salzburg Research offers a concise, real-time overview of six major commuting routes to Salzburg, directly comparing car, public transport, and Park+Ride options. This allows commuters to see current travel times, incidents, traffic conditions at a glance, enabling them to make informed decisions about their travel.
Salzburg Research has developed a new dashboard providing real-time visibility of the current traffic situation on six key commuter routes into Salzburg city center. This gives commuters and transport newsrooms a clear overview of car, public transport, and Park+Ride options, making it easier for them to compare and adjust their daily choice of transportation.
Traffic information: concise and easy to compare
The dashboard shows routes from Lamprechtshausen, Obertrum, Straßwalchen, St. Gilgen, Hallein, and Berchtesgaden, in both directions. For each route, Salzburg Research compares the main transport options and shows current travel times, as well as any delays or incidents, such as accidents or road closures. Departure times for public transport are also displayed.
“The situation on commuter routes into the city of Salzburg varies from day to day. The dashboard makes it easy to compare multiple options, so issues become apparent early on and the best available alternative is clearly identified without a lengthy search,” explains Karl Rehrl, head of the Mobility & Transport Analytics research group at Salzburg Research.
Real-time Park+Ride occupancy
A key feature of the dashboard is its display of the current occupancy rates at Park+Ride facilities, along with trend data. This enables commuters to see at a glance whether parking spaces are available at their chosen location. This information is sourced from official bodies such as police, ASFINAG, the Salzburg Transport Authority, and ÖBB Infrastructure. Salzburg Research supplements this with its own travel time data, which is calculated in real time using floating car data.
Research on multimodal mobility
The dashboard is part of the “MUST” research project by Salzburg Research, which examines the influence of traffic information on mobility decisions. The aim is to enable commuters to compare different modes of transport when choosing their route. “We are testing whether concise, targeted information encourages people to switch to public transport,” said Rehrl.
Feedback requested for further development
The application has been designed as an experimental pilot project, aimed at users who would like to provide feedback. Salzburg Research uses feedback from real-world use to evaluate the effectiveness of the dashboard and further develop it. The dashboard is free, available on mobile devices, and can be integrated into other websites.
The dashboard was developed as part of the MUST research project, which is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation, and Technology as part of the “Mobility Systems, Cities & Digitalization” program.
