Experience research up close
On 24 April 2026, researchers from across Austria will once again share insights into their work and demonstrate the real-world applications of research. Discover the latest research projects, meet the scientists behind them, and discuss forward-looking questions. There will be an extensive hands-on program inviting visitors to explore and marvel.
During the Long Night of Research, Salzburg Research will showcase its research work at Location I: Science City Itzling. Alongside other research institutions and organizations, this site is one of the event’s largest venues. With 32 stations to explore, Science City Itzling is the second-largest location of the event.
Discover the world of research at Salzburg Research
During the 2026 Long Night of Research, Salzburg Research will present these 10 stations and invite you to find out more about these areas of research:
Station I01: How Do Sensors Help in Winter Sports?
What actually happens during a carving turn? How do forces work during the shooting phase of a biathlon or luge race? Sensors in skis, boots, helmets and sports equipment make movements visible that would otherwise only be ‘felt’. Discover how these measurements provide direct feedback. Try out a biathlon light rifle for yourself and see how research improves technology, training and safety.
Station I02: Running in Rhythm: Can Breathing Help?
How does breathing affect running? With the Breathing Belt, you can find out for yourself. This smart belt measures your breathing rhythm and stride frequency while you run on the treadmill, providing feedback as you go. Join the challenge and see who can find their flow! Which city will reach the other faster in the virtual race — Salzburg or Graz?
Station I03: Real-Time Commuting Information: How Does it Work?
Should you take the car, public transport, or use Park+Ride? Our real-time dashboard shows current travel times, service disruptions and available Park+Ride spaces for six commuting routes around Salzburg, all at a glance. Compare options, find traffic jam alternatives, and tell us what information helps you in your daily commute.
Station I04: Research Bike: How Close Is the Overtaking?
What distance do cars maintain when overtaking cyclists? What sensor technology is used to measure passing distances? Explore the new research bike from Salzburg Research to find out how passing manoeuvres are measured to within a centimetre. Find out how new road markings in urban and rural areas are being tested to improve safety for cyclists in both environments.
Station I05: Salzburg on the Move: What Really Works?
Various road markings for cyclists were tested in the city of Salzburg on behalf of the mobility lab zukunftswege.at. Find out how these markings have affected passing distances between cars and bicycles, and how road users have reacted. The mobility lab also invites you to submit your own suggestions for sustainable mobility in Salzburg and join the discussion about them.
Station I06: Mobility 2040: Your Ideas Matter!
How will we get around Salzburg in the future? Share your ideas about the future of mobility in 2040 on IdeaSpace, the ideas platform from Salzburg Research. Discover other suggestions and cast your vote. We want to hear your perspective, whether you travel on foot, by bike, by public transport or by car. Join us here at the station and help shape the future of Salzburg!
Station I07: Does Sustainable Bicycle Logistics Work?
How can we make our shopping habits more sustainable? One major factor is the so-called ‘last mile’ — the delivery of online orders. In this exclusive insight into a recent study by Salzburg Research, discover interactive concepts and cargo bike logistics, and learn where to locate pickup stations to ensure they are accessible to people with disabilities.
Station I08: Test before Invest: Robots in Action?
Can digital assistants provide guests with information, help them find their way around and answer their questions? The ‘Test Before Invest’ concept from the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH) ‘Crowd in Motion’ shows how new technologies can be tested in a realistic way before being bought. Meet Buddy, the social robot, and find out how he can help by acting as an information point or guide.
Station I09: Energy Communities: When Is There Enough Electricity?
How is the collective solar power generated used most effectively, and what happens to it? Salzburg Research’s Community Aggregation Tool displays an energy community’s energy balance in real time. See when surpluses occur and when storage systems, heat pumps or electric vehicles should be used. Join our quiz on energy production! Aha moments guaranteed!
Station I10: Blackout: Help from Space?
What would happen if the power suddenly went out? Salzburg Research demonstrates how satellite communications can accelerate the restoration of the power grid. Find out which satellites are suitable for this purpose, how the power grid is rebuilt step by step, the role played by renewable energy plants, and why stable space-based connections can be crucial.
At the “Science City Itzling” location, visitors can also gain insights into the work of other research institutions and organizations:
- MINT:labs Science City Itzling (Salzburg Research & Paris Lodron University of Salzburg) – 1 Station
- MINT Salzburg – 1 Station
- Privat University Schloss Seeburg – 5 Stations
- HTBLuVA Salzburg – 7 Stations
- 4D Aerospace Research and Simulation GmbH – 6 Stations
- Ludwig Boltzmann Institut – 2 Stations
Together with these partner organizations, we offer an exciting hands-on program designed specifically for children and teens, as well as an evening full of discoveries and hands-on experience for guests of all ages.
