Crowdsourcing and innovative idea management for greater participation and experience quality
How can the already popular Salzburg Open-Air Museum be made more attractive, engaging, and visitor-friendly? As part of a digital ideas competition powered by the IdeaSpace platform, this question was posed to the “crowd”. The result? An impressive 114 ideas were submitted, and there was broad engagement from people of all ages.
Challenge
With around 100,000 visitors annually, the Salzburg Open-Air Museum is a popular destination for learning about regional history and experiencing lively cultural education. To enhance the visitor experience, the museum sought new ideas directly from the local population and potential visitors.
Solution
Digital ideas competition with jury and community voting
A public ideas competition was launched on the IdeaSpace digital platform with the motto “Your ideas for our time together at the Salzbrg Open-Air Museum“. Within a few weeks, 114 creative suggestions were submitted, ranging from new communication formats and experiential elements to creative service offers.
A 19-member jury of experts from the museum world, research, tourism, and regional stakeholders selected five winning ideas. Additionally, a community vote determined a sixth winner.
Result
Implementation workshops for the best ideas
The six winning ideas will be reviewed for feasibility in an implementation workshop with experts and idea generators. The goal is to prepare these innovative ideas for implementation in the museum, whether as a pilot project, long-term measure, or one-time offering.
Participation in the competition resulted in concrete ideas and strengthened the bond between the museum and the community. It was particularly encouraging that many participants expressed a desire to stay involved in the development process.
Conclusion
The ideas competition impressively demonstrates how digital engagement, innovative idea management, and participation can work together. Through the competition, the Salzburg Open-Air Museum receives valuable suggestions for further development and establishes itself as an open, forward-looking cultural space.
