Connected Boot: Reference System for Alpine Skiing
Salzburg Research’s Connected Boot is an innovative method of analyzing skiing technique in real-world conditions. Using modern sensor technology and data-driven analysis, it measures the quality of movement directly on the slopes and presents the results in an easy-to-understand format.
At the heart of the system is a sensor array attached to the ski boot. This array uses inertial measurement units (IMUs) to continuously record motion data, such as acceleration, rotation, and orientation. This data is processed in real time and converted into meaningful metrics. These include speed, edge angle, and other biomechanical parameters. Based on this data, a ski quality score is calculated to objectively evaluate technique and allow for easy interpretation. The system was developed in cooperation with Atomic (Altenmarkt, Austria) and the University of Salzburg, combining industrial product development with scientific research.
Precise insights right on the slopes
Analysis is performed directly in the field rather than in a laboratory. This enables movement patterns to be studied in real-world conditions, which is a significant advantage over traditional measurement methods. Specially developed algorithms are also used for tasks such as detecting ski turns or performing a detailed analysis of skiing styles.
A key feature is the immediate feedback provided to users. The results are clearly visualized via an app, helping athletes and coaches to improve their technique and adjust their training routines.
The methods and technologies used enable:
- objective analysis of skiing technique in real time
- measurement of key biomechanical parameters directly on the slope
- automatic detection of motion events such as jumps
- presenting complex data in an accessible way for different user groups
This establishes a seamless connection between data collection, analysis, and application. This allows complex biomechanical relationships to be translated into practical information that can be applied directly to training or product development.
Develop together, test in real-world conditions
The Connected Boot is integrated into a living lab infrastructure, enabling new features to be developed collaboratively with users and tested in real-world conditions. This user-centered approach ensures that the resulting solutions are practical and can be used immediately.
This offers clear benefits for customers and partners:
- targeted optimization of technology and training processes
- reducing improper loading and the risk of injury
- development and validation of innovative, data-driven products
- access to realistic testing and analysis environments in an alpine setting
Combining realistic data collection with scientific analysis provides a solid foundation for informed decision-making. Consequently, customers and partners reap the benefits of more efficient development processes and new, data-driven approaches in alpine sports.
