Ideas Competition: Future of Mobility 2040 in Salzburg
Sustainable mobility lies at the heart of the new goals set out in the City of Salzburg’s Mobility Plan 2040. The most important question now is how exactly Salzburg should achieve these goals. Through the new ideas competition on the IdeaSpace ideas platform from Salzburg Research, the City of Salzburg is inviting all citizens to contribute their ideas for the future of mobility in the city.
Climate change, climate protection, and sustainability are among the City of Salzburg’s most pressing issues. Through its new Mobility Plan 2040, the city is seeking to establish a robust framework for future practical initiatives in the realm of sustainable mobility. Alongside raising climate awareness, it is crucial to implement inclusive and accessible measures for all citizens.

With the new ideas competition “Shaping Salzburg’s Mobility Future 2040 Together” on the IdeaSpace ideas platform from Salzburg Research, the City of Salzburg is promoting dialogue between the city and its citizens. The competition aims to provide citizens with a platform to share their views on mobility. Whether walking every day, commuting by bicycle, using public transport, or traveling by motorized vehicles—all ideas and perspectives are important for shaping the future of the city.
Innovative ideas sought for nine subject areas
As part of an ideas competition, the City of Salzburg is inviting the public to answer the following question: What specific, feasible ideas do you have to help Salzburg achieve its mobility goals? Ideas can be submitted until April 30, 2026, in nine subject areas:
On foot
How can we make walking in Salzburg more pleasant and safer?
We are looking for ideas to make pavements more attractive and accessible, to improve road safety, and to create more places where people can relax and enjoy the city. We also welcome suggestions for the design of public spaces so that everyone can enjoy walking.
Cycling
How can cycling in our city be made even more attractive?
We are looking for ideas to improve safety, parking facilities, and road conditions for cyclists, as well as new services such as bike-sharing schemes and cargo bikes, to benefit people of all ages.
Better public transport
How can buses, trains, and other forms of public transport be improved?
Suggestions could include more frequent connections, new lines, comfortable waiting areas, and digital information for passengers, with the aim of making traveling by public transport easier and more enjoyable.
On the road with a vehicle
How can people who rely on cars get through Salzburg easily and without getting stuck in traffic?
There is limited space on our roads. In order to ensure that those who rely on cars can get around easily, we need to reduce overall car traffic. We are looking for ideas on how to achieve this, such as smart traffic management, parking solutions, car sharing, or new road space concepts.
Get involved & raise awareness
How can we generate excitement around sustainable mobility?
This requires creative initiatives, educational projects, and campaigns that demonstrate the effectiveness and enjoyment of environmentally friendly travel.
Mobile for all generations
How can we ensure that Salzburg remains easily accessible for everyone, young and old?
We are looking for ideas on how to achieve this, such as safe routes to school. barrier-free access, age-appropriate services, and transport solutions that exclude no one.
Clean driving & technologies
How can we achieve climate-friendly mobility?
We welcome suggestions on electric or hydrogen driving, the installation of more charging points, and the conversion of vehicle fleets so that Salzburg can be made more environmentally friendly.
Sustainable delivery & logistics
How can deliveries to the city be made in an environmentally friendly way?
We are looking for sustainable logistics ideas, such as using cargo bikes, micro-depots, or parcel boxes, to reduce traffic and emissions.
On the road as a guest
How can travel be made more environmentally friendly for visitors and reduce the burden on the city?
We are looking for ideas on how tourists can arrive and depart in a climate-friendly manner and travel around the city sustainably and reduce traffic congestion. This could be achieved through the use of park-and-ride facilities, car-sharing schemes, smart traffic management systems, or attractive combination tickets, for example.

The first workshop took place on 3 March at Techno Z Itzling. Citizens, experts, and politicians were given the chance to share their thoughts and engage in constructive dialogue on the subject of mobility. A variety of new and innovative ideas were proposed during the event.
