5G-EXPS – 5G-EXPS – 5G Exploration Space Salzburg
Vendor-neutral 5G research infrastructure for testing 5G applications and products.

A 5G network’s operation and configuration must be adapted to an application’s specific requirements. At the 5G Exploration Space in Salzburg, relevant 5G use cases are prepared and tested for this purpose. The goal is to rule out interactions and guarantee security and privacy. Meanwhile, vendor-independent monitoring tools are being developed to ensure compliance with network characteristics.
Vendor-independent control tools
At the 5G Exploration Space in Salzburg, vendor-independent monitoring tools are being developed to ensure the safe operation of this technology for critical applications, such as the remote monitoring and coordination of mobile robots and AGVs (autonomous guided vehicles). Signal transmission delays could result in serious accidents in such cases. Specially developed 5G measurement tools continuously check compliance with the required characteristics. These tools allow users to independently verify the promises made by manufacturers or operators.
Four use cases from Salzburg
The 5G Exploration Space Salzburg is implementing four specific applications. These applications address requirements that current 4G networks are unable to meet. The 5G network is operated in various configurations to evaluate the performance characteristics of each configuration.
- Remote control of (industrial) robots: Control of robots via a 5G network within laboratories and across networks from other mobile locations.
- Real-time feedback in sports: recording movements using sensors, intelligently linking and processing different sensor data, and transmitting the results back to athletes as real-time feedback.
- Collaborative design of urban space: Participatory processes in spatial planning and for collaborative urban design with the aid of virtual and augmented reality.
- 5D Smart Campus: A digital live model of Science City Itzling is being developed through a combination of 3D data bases, fixed sensors, and mobile devices. This enables smart services for orientation and mobility for students, suppliers, visitors, and employees, as well as for facility management for maintenance and better use of resources and infrastructure.
Know-how for Salzburg
Companies in the region are receiving expertise and technologies from the 5G Exploration Space Salzburg. This is possible because 5G can be implemented with relatively low investment. Most industrial applications only require a local network within a factory or plant, not a comprehensive 5G network.
Der „5G Exploration Space Salzburg” schafft zudem eine regionale Testumgebung für 5G-Anwendungen. In dieser können Unternehmen aller Größen und Branchen eigene 5G-Anwendungen oder -Produkte testen.
5G Exploration Space Salzburg
The 5G Exploration Space Salzburg brings together the expertise of key research institutions in Salzburg:
- Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (project management)
- Center for Human-Computer Interaction and Interfaculty Department of Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) at the University of Salzburg
- Salzburg University of Applied Sciences
- Research Studio Austria FG iSpace
The 5G Exploration Space Salzburg is funded as part of the province of Salzburg’s WISS2025 strategy. Salzburg AG provides the necessary equipment and frequencies for operating the 5G network. Science City Itzling and the Urstein campus will serve as test sites.
