From July 7 to 9, 2026, Salzburg Research brought digital manufacturing to children’s city Mini Salzburg. Through workshops offered by MINT:labs Science City Itzling, children and teenagers learnt how 3D printing works, developed their own models, and brought their creative ideas to life using 3D pens.

From an idea to your own 3D Model

The Salzburg Research team clearly demonstrated how digital designs are transformed into three-dimensional objects as well as the fields in which 3D printing is used. Participants designed their own models and printed them on the spot. They also created unique works of art with 3D pens.

The workshop combined technical learning with creative design. Children and teens gained hands-on experience with digital production processes and had the opportunity to try out the technology firsthand.

Children interview other children about 3D printing

As part of the program, several children took on the role of researchers. They surveyed and interviewed 130 children and teenagers about their knowledge of, ideas about, and expectations for 3D printing.

When asked about potential items to print, respondents most frequently suggested everyday objects, animals, people, and characters. Buildings, technical objects, and electronics were also popular choices. Overall, the responses demonstrate that children associate 3D printing with practical applications and creative design.

Looking ahead, respondents expect faster and more efficient printing methods, larger and more powerful home devices, and new applications.

Making research and technology accessible through play

Through the workshops offered by MINT:labs Science City Itzling, the University of Salzburg and Salzburg Research aim to strengthen participants’ understanding of digital technologies, mathematics, and the natural sciences and to help them experience research as an active, creative process.
