Open innovation methods have the potential to tackle complex challenges by involving diverse stakeholders and end-users. This paper contributes to better understand the use and benefit of co-creation methods for systematic modelling the complex interactions and mechanisms in an e-mobility innovation ecosystem by drawing on the case of shared energy procurement. In this newly emerging field novel technical solutions, business models, and the integration of various stakeholder perspectives is highly required. Thus, this work explores the use of three different co-creation instruments starting with a systematic analysis and visualisation of the different actors, roles, activities, and risks involved. Based on this, end-users were invited in an idea competition to think about their needs and propose ideas on how they can best benefit from being part of such an ecosystem. All these results were shared and evaluated with experts and stakeholders and used to develop common value propositions for such a new ecosystem.
We found that taking such a mixed-method-approach provided wide-ranging input which was readily drawn on within the scope of our research project. Including multiple stakeholders shows promising results in the modelling of innovation ecosystems and fosters trust among the ecosystem actors. The challenge of achieving a joint innovation ecosystem value proposition in grid-aware mobility is the intertwining of actors who can be in simultaneous cooperation and competition, the risk of stakeholders not delivering to the ecosystem and the role of government regulation to enable such exchanges. Moreover, the iterative process of the used OI-methods responds to the dynamic of the ecosystem and thus contributes to its longevity and sustainability.
