Between Safety and Disruption: Worker Perspectives on AGVs in Warehouse Operations
Katja Tiefengrabner, Christina Studnicka (2026): Between Safety and Disruption: Worker Perspectives on AGVs in Warehouse Operations In: MuC 26: Proceedings of Mensch und Computer 2026
Autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) are increasingly applied in industrial settings, such as warehouse logistics. While there is much known about the various acceptance factors relevant to the industrial context, little is known about lived experiences of employees in such contexts. Through semi-structured interviews incorporating narrative elements, we explored real-life challenges encountered by forklift drivers and maintenance staff, shedding light on their interactions with AGVs. Adopting a holistic approach to technology acceptance, we identified recurring challenges related to safety, predictability, and adapting workflows to accommodate AGVs. Based on our findings, we discuss initial implications for the successful integration of AGVs in industrial contexts.
