1st birthday of Sigi’s R&D Blog

… was on April 13th, see The Initial Entry.

So far there was only one comment (by my “old” friend Sunil – thanks for that); still, I meanwhile see blogging as a (personal) tool for me that helps me to archive, summarise, etc. highlights of the current week (similar to the intellectual capital report of Salzburg Research does for the current year).

Forschung Austria Workshop on Indicators and Monitoring

Forschung Austria Logo

Forschung Austria organised a workshop on assessment and monitoring of RTD programmes in Salzburg, with a focus on “smaller scale programmes”. Participants were from Joanneum Research, Salzburg Research and partly ARC.

Presenters included

What I personally learned at the workshop: Germany invests substantial amounts of resources into non-University R&D, even when size-wise compared to Austria; it is a clever idea to think of exploitation even after the end of a project (DLR does so, for instance, two years later. Great idea!); indicators are truly difficult: even if they have agreed semantics and similar values, the structures behind may still not be comparable.

e-business Watch in Tourism

ebusiness Watch

E-business Watch is a set of studies about the penetration of ICT in several sectors. The study refered to above concerns the tourism sector.

Compared to other sectors, tourism has strengths in “C2 Use of ICT systems for sourcing” and in “D2 Firms accepting users online”, while not doing so well with respect to other criteria.

The e-business watch web-site is available at www.ebusiness-watch.org

Offene Bildung im/mit dem Web 2.0!?!

Open Access Symposium

Salzburg Research organised a symposium on open education and/within the Web 2.0. About 150+ participants, excellent keynote speakers.

  • Brian Holmes from the European Commission, DG Education and Culture and head of the agency for Education, Audiovisual & Culture argued for open content that reflects our cultural heritage, also encourages young people to learn
  • Guntram Geser of Salzburg Research presented recommendations of a recent study he has done (the OLCOS Roadmap)
  • Bernie Dodge from the San Diego State University talked about Webquest and his (personal) taxonomy
  • Niall Slater from the Open University, UK, presented facts and figures about the real-world usage of open e-learning materials in the openlearn initiative

Further information and the slides of the presentation are available at edumedia.salzburgresearch.at.

Berlin Declaration on Open Access

See the paper Berlin Declaration on open access to scientific knowledge (in German). I heard about it in a panel discussion on sharing knowledge.

The declaration argues that the Internet has changed the way science is communicated and that the new medium is the Internet. To support the principle of open access is therefore one of the goals of the declaration. This principle implies that

  • You grant access to others (given that credits are maintained)
  • You guarantee longterm availability of the contents

BTW: In preparation for the panel discussion (which was on sharing of knowledge) I came across an interesting article available at wissenskapital.de (“Erfolg durch Kommunikation”) that mentioned a German biotech-company whose (new) boss argued that withholding of knowledge was equivalent to mobbying. Obviously, he was talking about intra-company sharing of knowledge and not about giving away knowledge to competitors ;-) .

One out of a Million

iPod Logo (image copyright Apple)

Apple announced that 100 Millionen iPods have been sold. An impressive number! I own one of them: personally I would still prefer a single device rather than an iPod, a mobile phone, …

Anyway: congratulations to Apple ;-)

And: Apple announced a cooperation with MGM in order to increase the number of movies to be sold via iTunes to 500+ (see also http://futurezone.orf.at/business/stories/185166/.

Shift Happens

Glumbert.com Logo(image refers to glumbert.com)

A colleague pointed me to this media presentation about “shift” at glumbert.com. It is about the “exponential times” we are living in; the amount of new technical information is doubling every two years: this means that if you are studying a four year’s degree, half of what you learn in your first year will be outdated in your third year, … some very good phrases in that video!

BTW: Glumbert.com according to its own definition is “the most outstanding, zaniest, and downright amazing videos you’ll ever see…anywhere”www.glumbert.com.
