This evening there was a panel discussion organised by APA, Austria’s Press Agency, on the theme of “research needs more than money”. What that more could be was discussed by
- Josef Penninger (Director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology)
- Peter Skalicky (TU Wien)
- Andreas Reichhardt (BMVIT)
- Siegfried Reich (Salzburg Research)
- Klaus Pseiner (FFG)
- Helmut-Peter Kowalski (BMBWK)
The discussion was moderated by Christian Müller. There was high interest by people; an excellent networking event. It is also available online as http://www.ots.at/presseaussendung.php?ch=medien&schluessel=OTS_20070131_OTS0125&ex=1

A cool social software tool by deri-galway, my colleague Sebastian Schaffert pointed me to it: SIOC, semantically-interlinkded online communities (apparently pronounced “shok”). A simple ontology, you need a plugin for your blog-software (WordPress, Drupal, DotClear and others), same for your client (currently firefox).
Some sample SIOC-enabled sites: see http://esw.w3.org/topic/SIOC/EnabledSites. The main web-site can be found at http://sioc-project.org/.

wirkle.com is an innovative startup, headquartered in California but with Sunil and his team doing the basic research and development in India. Sunil did an internship at Salzburg Research and also stayed with us as researcher for almost two years.
Wirkle is a middleware platform for content syndication for mobile platforms. A pretty cool thing!

It seems that versioning of the web is increasing faster than the development of the Web itself. Quite an inflation of numbers! The following table lists google hits corresponding to the various versions.

In Salzburg’s congress centre, a conference was held on Salzburg’s future by 2020, organised by “Netzwerk Salzburg”, www.netzwerk-salzburg.at, an organisation supported by Austria’s socialist party: SPÖ.
There were lively discussions on education, health, economy, work & social aspects. Around 300 attendees. Good networking event (as the name suggests
)

For instance at http://www.diepresse.com/download/pdf/regierungsprogramm.pdf the programme of Austria’s new government can be downloaded.
From a research perspective it is good to see quite substantial amounts of money being invested: it is a sign that research and innovation are still high up on the agenda.
pp. 99 ff provide a little bit of detail concerning non-university research, most notably a restructring of Austria’s academy of science and extra money for the science fund (no numbers are mentioned, though; also, it is interesting to see this entry in the section “non-university”, I would have thought that most of the FWF funding is targeted towards universities.)
