The IST-Conference in Helsinki …
November 24th, 2006
… was very well attended. Apparently some 4300 participants were there.
My impressions in two sentences are
- Intelligent Content, or, multimedia and semantics are core themes. In FP6 as well as in FP7
- I still somewhat miss the broad take-up by industry. There are some what you would call “early adopters”; however, the majority of industrial players in my opinion is still rather sceptical.
And: amongst the many sessions I attended, I participated in the Wednesday session on “intelligent content and semantics” where
Paul Kafno provided an excellent metaphor: he argued that “content is like milk; it goes off very quickly and you need a fresh bottle of it every day”. I think this expresses very well the users’ perspective on content.
BTW: the conference’s homepage (with many of the presentations available online) can be found at http://europa.eu.int/information_society/istevent/2006/index_en.htm.
