100 + Million Web Sites

Netcraft Logo

Netcraft just reported that there are more than 100 Million web-sites available. The exact figure for end of November 2006 is 101,435,253. Amazing!

The current population of the earth is estimated at 6667075382 (that is what the Java applet displays on Nov. 24 2006, 22:11:02). That is one site for about 65 people. The question is whether No. of people or No. of sites will be growing more quickly …

See http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2006/11/01/november_2006_web_server_survey.html. Particularely interesting is the graph that visualises the growth (i.e., the steepness of the curve in recent years): see

The IST-Conference in Helsinki …

FP7 Logo

… was very well attended. Apparently some 4300 participants were there.

My impressions in two sentences are

  • Intelligent Content, or, multimedia and semantics are core themes. In FP6 as well as in FP7
  • I still somewhat miss the broad take-up by industry. There are some what you would call “early adopters”; however, the majority of industrial players in my opinion is still rather sceptical.

And: amongst the many sessions I attended, I participated in the Wednesday session on “intelligent content and semantics” where Paul Kafno provided an excellent metaphor: he argued that “content is like milk; it goes off very quickly and you need a fresh bottle of it every day”. I think this expresses very well the users’ perspective on content.

BTW: the conference’s homepage (with many of the presentations available online) can be found at http://europa.eu.int/information_society/istevent/2006/index_en.htm.

Internet Wayback machine

… something I knew that it exists, however, from time to time you have to revisit sites again in order to really remember what they are about.

The Internet Archive – Wayback machine is a pretty cool thing. Here are some images of the Salzburg Research home page (except for some Java classes most entries still seem to work properly).

SRFG 1998 12 – Dec 1998 SRFG 1999 11 – Nov 1999 SRFG 2000 9 – Oct 2000
SRFG 2001 27 – Nov 2001 SRFG 2002 29 – Nov 2002 SRFG 2006 Current

Interesting to see that in 1998 we were recommending Netscape 3, something one would not do these days. Also, URL forwarding has the implication that some of the features do not work as expected (because one is rerouted to the current address). Application level protocols would need to have the “typical” parameters of information spaces incorporated, i.e., subject, place and time (WHAT do I want to see based on WHERE and WHEN).

Salzburg FP7 Kick-Off Event

FP7 Logo

Today, a local kick-off event for the 7th Framework Programme took place in Salzburg (organised by FFG in cooperation with the University of Salzburg and ITG Salzburg).

The event was extremely well attended, very informative presentations (and workshops in the afternoon). We are looking forward to the IST event next week in Helsinki.

My presentation was on the “other side”, i.e., the reviewers’ perspective. I think in most presentations (for the framework programmes) this is neglected. And, having been a reviewer myself, I know how difficult it is to judge objectively and to communicate the proposal’s message so that it can be understood (in very short time) by the reviewers.

The agenda (see http://ww2.ffg.at/Downloads/6A19BF31.pdf)

  • 10.00 Begrüßung und Einleitung by Eduard Mainoni | Staatssekretär; Henrietta Egerth | FFG Geschäftsführerin und Gabi Burgstaller | Landeshauptfrau von Salzburg
  • 10.15 Das 7. EU-Rahmenprogramm für Forschung, technologische Entwicklung und Demonstration im Überblick by Sabine Herlitschka | FFG Bereichsleiterin Europäische und Internationale Programme
  • anschl. Fragen, Diskussion
  • 11.00 Kleine und Mittlere Unternehmen im 7. EU-Rahmenprogramm
Marcus Bidmon | FFG Europäische und Internationale Programme
  • 11.15 Themenschwerpunkte Informationstechnologie und Biowissenschaften
Thomas Zergoi und Birgit Steininger | FFG Europäische und Internationale Programme

Intellectual Capital Statement II

Salzburg Research intellectual capital statement Logo

With respect to an older entry (http://www.salzburgresearch.at/~sreich/components/com_jd-wp/2006/05/18/intellectual-capital-report/, I just came across an excellent (German) description of intellectual capital reports (Wissensbilanz). See http://web.fh-ludwigshafen.de/ibe/index.nsf/de/wissensbilanz. And, of course, there exists a Wikipedia entry.

European Trend Chart on Innovation

European Innovation Trend Chart Logo

On page 19, of http://trendchart.cordis.lu/reports/documents/Country_Report_Austria_2005.pdf of the European trendchart on innovation policy in Austria, there is graphical overview of Austria’s indicator on R&D spending.

As one can see, Austria is doing pretty well with respect to the 3% Lisbon objective (the (estimated) value for 2006 is 2,34%).

Schumpeter, Innovation and “schöpferische Zerstörung”

Schumpeter

… while looking up sites on innovation, I started with “the source”. And came across some Wikipedia entries.

What I think is important is the distinction between invention und innovation. Invention is concerned with coming up with ideas, building prototypes, etc. Innovation is about implementation and realisation.

As researchers we are mainly concerned with invention, i.e., coming up with ideas and building prototypes.
